Infectious diseases are still among the major causes of temporary incapacity and hospitalizations, leading to significant economic loss and taking a financial toll on the healthcare system. Even though infectious diseases mortality is generally low in Bulgaria, worldwide it is still considerable, making up 25% of total mortality. Rapid developments in contemporary medicine and pharmaceutical manufacturing following the discovery of penicillin has allowed us to forget the pandemics of the plague, influenza, tuberculosis, cholera that claimed the lives of millions of people between the Middle Ages and the early 20th century.
